...LIVE Report : DOPETHRONE / HUATA / BUDDHA SENTENZA - Heidelberg 31th May 2013 !!!

The 31rd of may – a date that was marked a long time ago in my schedule, as it should have been in the schedule of all doomsters around Heidelberg. The first time that such an event takes place in this romantic and picturesque city! As I have already told Ronan (Huata’s singer) at HDDT in Copenhagen: “Huata and Dopethrone are the first doom bands ever playing in Heidelberg!” (in any case in the past few years)

Correspondingly, the audience grew steadily until Dopethrone’s performance shortly before midnight. There were a lot of faces I have already met at other underground gigs at more or less farther locations indeed, but I have also seen unknown faces and met people who traveled to this gig from other parts of Germany. Small wonder, considering the great lineup and the surprisingly favourable price of the ticket!

However, right after the opening of the gates, the number of attendants is still very manageable. But already when the local support BUDDHA SENTENZA start to paint their cosmic landscapes, a bunch of curious figures gathers slightly cautiously before the stage. It doesn’t take long and the ice is broken – BUDDHA SENTENZAs atmospheric sound takes you on a seemingly endless journey to distant spheres, only to toss you back sometimes to reality with their massive riffs and pounding drums. Their sound may be characterized as a mixture of the several outstanding elements that psychedelic, stoner, spacerock and Black Sabbath have to offer. Combining their diversified, intense sound with the perfectly matched light show, the audience is slowly led through floating soundscapes with psychedelic elements and the “free-spirit-feeling” the guys describe their music with. Amongst others, their songs include “Time Wave Zero”, “Arrested Development” (both from their new release) and “Black Coal Funera”l (from their release in 2009).

After some fresh beer, the crowd gathers in front of the stage again. Soon, HUATA’s powerful sound booms out of the boxes and an intense, rituous experience of occult forces begins. For around 60 minutes  we, the audience, are made part of a ceremony clad in shivering vibes and lead by the distinctive summons of Ronan’s unique voice. Like lambs, we go slowly with the deep vibes – or are grabbed by pounding riffs and straightforward, energetic drum sounds. Actually, I do not care how they do it, but HUATA turn us all into their followers, infuse us with dark forces and let us forget anything but the exclusive microcosm around the Halle02 in Heidelberg. Yet, their sound offers great variety – although there is great diversity in it, the elements are arranged very creatively, so that they create something as a whole. The same it is with their performance – it does not matter if Ronan stays on stage playing the devotional chords on the hammond organ or if he descends and continues his prayers among the audience. In either case, the entire experience is intense without exceptions and this is not at least due to the well-chosen projections above the stage.
Their setlist includes the songs “The Retaliator” and “Hercolubus” from their recent split with Bitcho (which has a stunning cover artwork, by the way!), as well as songs from Atavist of Mann (Lords of the Flame, Thee Imperial Wizard, Operation Mistletoe) and from their EP Open the Gates of Shambhala (Alchemist Reborn).

Right after HUATA’s last song, the merchandise corner fills up with excited attendants, so that there is only little time left to catch a great LP or T-Shirt until DOPETHRONE’s first heavy tones reverberate through the quite ample location. Soon, the first rows are drawn nearer to the edge of the stage and
the space in front of the stage fills up. It does not take long and the dark energy flowing out of the boxes and rolling off the bandmembers seems to seize us all. You see hair and fists cutting the air and you feel how everyone becomes part of the same experience: heavy, suffocating sludge mixed up with the right portion of fast, straightforward parts and a huge pinch of destructive, latent aggression that seems to have been suppressed for too long – a beast, longing now for its release, ready to demolish, full of filthy dark energy. The lighting of the stage and the plain Dopethrone-logo on the wall underscore this atmosphere – no additional projections or light shows are needed (actually, the drummer even asks for dimmer lighting). Just the pure, oppressive, blackened mix of sludge and doom without compromise.
Without compromise are the vocals as well – crushing, harsh and with eyes shut sounding like some animal’s menace out of the dark. It is really stunning, what a big force can be built up by only three guys hauling the most grimy, pulsating grooves out of their instruments. With songs like Porcelain God, Reverb Deep and Storm Reefer they start their mean, but groovy crusade through Heidelberg’s night. Their setlist is a perfect mix of older songs, such as Demonsmoke or Zombie Powder and the title track from Dark Foil, and powerful new ones like Devil’s Dandruff. Of course, we do not want to let them go after a good hour of being exposed to their great and solid perfomance – as a thank-you, we get our bonus song, the very unique version of Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine”.

Although it was hard to let them go and to realize that the whole gig is over, I remember this evening as an extraordinarily great one. Thus, I have to say many thanks to my friends of HERB concerts, who do their best to organize a couple of underground concerts with great bands in the rather dead region around Heidelberg! It was a perfect line-up and a pleasant atmosphere – and, finally, to conclude: a fucking huge evening with great bands who definitely did justice to other doom-infected events and made this first gathering in this region a solid foundation for further ones.

Thanx a lot to Melinda for this cool report, more pictures of this gig will be soon posted  watch out for this soon through her FB page :

my ROADBURN 2012...

That's my report : no long descriptions, no setlists... just my shit !

***** THE TOP 3 :

ORCHID : the equivalent of CANDLEMASS special "epicus..." show last year = MEMORABLE... a bit more than an hour of HITS (from the ep and album) with a fantastic sound, and two new songs that ripped... The guys are very impressive of fluency and should blow everything away with their new album.  I've very rarely felt such a communion between a band and its fans, pure moments of shared happiness !

YOB :  Mike and his buddies did something I hardly could have expected with playing the cultish "the unreal never lived" in its entirety (and the song "adrift in the ocean" as unexpected bonus)... The sound was HUGE, just perfect for a 1hour and 15 minutes LESSON of epic and crushing heaviness; particularly at ease in his killer growls, this gig confirms my opinion that Mike S. became definitely the most complete vocalist of the Doom scene.

NECROS CHRISTOS : ten times heavier than on album, imagine the carnage ! one of my fave DM gigs ever, certainly the best DM vocal performance I've seen Live; they definitely have created their own style... impatient to see them again in June at the Hellfest !

+ bonus gigaplus : the DIAMOND QUEEN from The Grass Company

**** Other significant HIGHLIGHTS

SIGIRIYA : excellent performance from the welsh band; Stuart is incredible on stage : very incisive and groovy, funny to see how he's always smiling during his awesome solos ! great vocal performance here too

LORD VICAR : due to some little problems with the sound, particularly on Chritus vocals, they needed a bit of time to be at their usual high level, but the set was globally memorable with obviously a good part of songs from their brilliant sophomore album

OM : no photos, definitely too dark to take good photos (at least in my position with my camera) but a perfect ambiance though... massive heavy sounds with refinement, tightness and dark emotions

+ bonus superplus : our own cocktails with RHUM and grapefruit, plus the excellent general ambience reigning during the festival

*** GREAT

VOIVOD : playing "dimension hatröss" in its entirety, that says it all !

CHURCH OF MISERY : too bad about the Bass problems but the new singer is very competitive and this australian guitarist is always a fucking master !

THE WOUNDED KINGS : I liked very much the few moments I've seen, but too short ... I'm ashamed towards such a great band and so nice people : in March I already missed a great part of their gig in Rennes cause I had been too longly talking with the singer of TBDLB and now I just see the 1st song of their set, feeling very bad at that moment I need to go outside during a little hour... victim of a serious technical problem of proportions in what I was smoking :(

THE OBSESSED : good set but I was expecting better, with let's say ... more taste ! Wino did the job, nothing more special.

DOPETHRONE : I expected something a bit wilder from Montreal's trio, they seemed a bit stressed and tired, certainly the consequences of  Vincent's guitar that had been stolen during the travel ! but their filthy Sludge ripped and to see Carl hammering is drums so heavily was amazing.

DANAVA : no photos as I was too much in the back of the small Stage 01, but the set was good with if I'm not wrong all the songs from "hemisphere of shadows" except one, adding two great songs of the sophomore album for maybe the bluesiest gig of my week-end.

HUATA : the french band was very awaited by their recent and old fans and attracted quite many curious too I guess... thinking something like "who are these druids playing fuzzy occult Stoner/Doom with a bottle of chouchen in hands ?" A bit stressed, having to face again some sound problem capacities, but soon in their set, the french band presents finally to the world "the Atavist  of Mann" and it makes no doubt that new fans have been conquered by their extreme heaviness, accentuated by very tight and serious performances from the guitarist and Ronan on vocals.

MARS RED SKY : would deserve a better mention certainly, but I saw only about 10 minutes of this french band that really  needs more attention (including from me first !).

SAVIOURS : sweat, hair and Metal... that's the 3 words that come in mind when thinking about their performance, very catchy brand of metallic Stoner n' roll !

CELESTIAL SEASON : very good moment with those dutch death/doomsters playing their "solar lovers" album 17 years later; didn't remember that the Stoner overtones were so nicely present there, great !

BONGRIPPER : too bad I was really tired for one of Saturday's last gigs, but they were immensely brutal which along with my last joint (before leaving back to France) definitely finished me !!!

+  the listening session of the new ST VITUS : great idea and thanx for this special rolling paper !
+ the enormous breakfasts I took at the hotel

*AVERAGE

40 WATT SUN : should be seen in another context, to play on the biggest scene wasn't appropriated at all

WITCH : a few good moments/riffs but their repertory is definitely too unequal.

- DISAPPOINTING  :

SLEEP - how can this get so much praise ? too fucking noisy, most of the songs were so hardly recognizable ! he, look at the photo ... seriously, does a band who originally play some Sabbathian stuff need so many amps ???

- the TRAVEL to arrive at Tilburg, late after various successive problems that led me to miss D.USK !

- Too many people at some point this year, that's a serious problem for the smaller rooms... it was impossible to see CONAN for example unless you arrived at least 15 minutes before; that has been the only band I personally missed for that reason but that was the same problem for most gigs in Stage 01 and the Green Room. I saw LORD VICAR, DOPETHRONE, NECROS CHRISTOS, HUATA and a few others, in rather great conditions, just because I was there about 20 minutes before the gig started ! Otherwise, if luckily there's still one or two places in the hall you have to pray not being behind 2 or 3 giant dutch or vikings !!!
Nothing dramatical and hard to live at all, this is just to say that this is a waste of time for discovering bands like I used to do last year or at the Hellfest for example...

All in all this was pretty memorable, a little bit under2011 for myself but not so surprising as last year  included more DOOM bands I think... But I'm a bit afraid about next year, considering that E.W. will be curators, I fear this will bring many more people pretending for a ticket to the festival, including certainly mainstream people... the price of success !
THANX to the organisation and bands for all those great moments :)

interview with Quebec's monsters : DOPETHRONE

Even if released quickly after the band's formation, "demonsmoke" the first album of Montreal's trio DOPETHRONE had yet shown a serious potencial, but two years later, with a more than slightly developed sense of composition, "dark foil" has given naturally the band a new  status in the scene... Nothing "trendy" under the highlights, just a deep respect from the true underground, leading to the next Roadburn, which for a young unsigned band is a very nice recognition - and more locally certainly hailed as the natural leader that our cousins were expecting for a long while and all the better if they play some of the most sickest sludge/stoner/doom ever !!! Imagine the perfect cross between early Electric Wizard, Bongzilla and Weedeater, that's what you got here, the kind of band that you can't fully enjoy if you're clean !!! "dark foil" shows a great step towards something more of their own, thicker and more oppressive  too, with some of the most vicious vocals ever... Their smoky sound now well spreaded (but there's never enough, so if you haven't tasted it yet, check out their bandcamp page) and beautiful projects announced for 2012, it was time to ask Vincent (guit/voc) a few questions :

- Hail Vincent, you formed in 2008 and less than year after released "demonsmoke", what's your look on this first album now ?
Now that I sit down, drink a cold one and listen to our first album, I remember the haze of all the tasty smoke we inhaled in order to come up with that riffage.

“Demonsmoke” was recorded only 9 months after we started playing together, we were hanging out, getting ripped and we had access to a decent basement studio at Thom’s old place (our former drummer) so we decided to make this project “official”. But it was only the beginning, we were getting closer and closer to what was gonna become “our” sound.

- In my opinion, this first album was more crude, somekind of blackened stoner/doom, while "dark foil" eyes a lot more on sludge, the music is deeply enriched, thicker but also more sick, vicious and even if that was hardly possible more smoky... also I think you certainly improved a lot as musicians ! how do you see the evolution between both albums ?
With Demonsmoke, we were still figuring out what our sound was gonna be, it was kind of a experiment… but the response was great, and we were having fun, so we kept on givin’er.
So, after Thom left, we got a different drummer (Carl Borman). We also changed some of our gear. Let’s just say shit got pretty fucking crazy, (substance abuse & more) and we finally gave birth to Dark Foil.

- The original logo reminded the one of Venom... was it a wink or a reminiscence of some tastes for black metal stuff ? The new one looks better, more simple and sober, why did you change it ?
I drew that “Venom style” logo by hand because I really dig the style and when it comes to being in league with Satan, Venom has this “omnipresence” in people’s minds… Kind of like the Coca-Cola logo does… The main difference is that; unlike Dopethrone, Coca-Cola doesn’t turn your earwax into hash oil.

- While it has always provided quality death/thrash metal bands, the doom/stoner/sludge scene in Quebec seems pretty small... how do you explain this strange phenomenon ? Except Dopethrone, Cauchemar and Ensorcelor, is there any new bands to recommend ?
Well there isn’t much Doom sauce up here, except for maybe: Squalor, Stoned Horses & Downtrodden. I think the weather as lot to do with the whole “Heavy/Sludge” phenomenon, it’s way warmer down south and people tend to be more laid back.

- When I've been in Quebec a while ago, I noticed that you guys were very attached to the french language, even blaming us to use often anglicism... what's your opinion about that and does France represent something special for you ? do you feel more steeped by the North American or the French culture ?
Well, I don’t know who you met out here, but we don’t discriminate, we party in both languages… and we don’t blame anyone for using Anglicism… We are from North America. Our ancestors are lumberjacks that were having sex with hot native women.

Unless someone speaks the original language from the tribe this land was taken from, they have no right to blame people about what language they speak.

- Did you get any tangible recognition from your dealers for their apparition in your thanx list for "dark foil" ?!!! I've lived 4 months in St Pierre et Miquelon in 2008 and was kind of surprised that almost all drugs available were coming through New Foundland, were you aware of this ? what kind of weed is especially circulating in Montreal ?
We wish we got some free drugs out of this, but no.                                                                                     The best shit around right now is: 1-Jean-Guy 2-Kush 3-Jack Hearer

- You asked your fans ideas to give a name for your future european tour next year, so any good idea selected ? Could you tell more about these touring plans ? Knowing that Walter was in Montreal this summer, I feel there's a real possibility to see you guys playing at Roadburn, am I wrong ?!!! (this was sent just the day before the announcement...)
Yeah, ROADBURN is on the list!!!
We plan to do a small European tour so we can spread the demonic sludgy Dopethrone sickness around… We didn’t find the name of the tour yet, but we got a few good ideas from our fans.

- I know you've plans for a record deal, and certainly the perspective of a future european tour is closely linked to this, could you tell something about that please ?- I know you've plans for a record deal, and certainly the perspective of a future european tour is closely linked to this, could you tell something about that please ?

Actually, no plan for a record deal so far… And… No link to the tour… Our stuff is 100% D.I.Y. and we intend to keep it that way and manage ourselves until we get a decent offer.

You're in a very productive state of mind musically, as material is ready for a 3rd album, will it be a logical following to "dark foil" or should we expect some special evolutions ?
We are almost finish writing the 3rd album, we might call it “Hooked”, but we are not completely sure yet. I think we found our sound with “Dark Foil” but the next album will be more violent/punishing and evil, some faster/more aggressive grooves. But don’t worry, a lot of slow thick riffage with drug-fueled bluesy leads also. We are also considering a stoner “Sitar” style intro.

- How did it come that you plan to cover the bluesy "graveyard train" from Creedence Clearwater Revival ? any special taste for this kind of stuff ? Will it be included to next album or for another release ?
Yeah the CCR cover will be included in the next album, We love that swamp music, because that and the blues are the true roots of sludge.

- I was pointing the rather unactive scene in Quebec for occult stoner/doom metal, but I know that France is neither a reference too, do you enjoy any french bands though ? Are you attracted by a scene in particular ? Could you please name your faves for 2011 ?
I can’t think of any heavy bands from France at the moment…
The New-Orleans sludge scene is definitely our favourite.

- On your FB page, there's very very nice photos taken recently at a rehearsal, those are in white&black which is pretty rare, was it your idea ?
Wasn’t my Idea, one of our friends from Pelecanus.net showed up with is camera at one of our rehearsals and he took those, he’s really fucking good.

- Well, thanx a lot cousin, add something if you want (I'm thinking especially about your awesome T-shirt !)...
