an in-depth interview with Portland's retro 70's heavy rock sensation : THE MOSS

I've presented you this new band from Portland and their demo-CD "Wulfram" about two weeks ago... I've listened this little jewel again and again since then and definitely can't enough of it, it'll be for sure in my top 10 of the year and classifies the band in my top 3 concerning newcomers of 2011 !!!
As you've certainly been confirmed through other reviews published here and there recently, THE MOSS is not just another new band among many others in the retro 70's heavy rock scene, this band has a REAL identity :  bluesy, tasty, groovy, with a doomy and mystical approach very particular to them. I'm convinced that they have yet to be ranged as a key-element of the tomorrow's scene with GRAVEYARD, DANAVA and UNCLE ACID... Go now on Bandcamp and purchase "WULFRAM" for 6.66 miserable Dollars or wait for the vynil release early 2012, but do absolutely NOT miss them !
Here's now an in-depth interview with Adam (guit/voc) to let you know more about the band; a pretty cool one even if it ends on a pretty strange note (but nothing dramatical at all...), thanx to him to have answered that one so quickly and for having been so interesting and eloquent.

You don't seem to be teenagers for sure but were you guys all born when Ozzy left B.S. in 1978 ? did you have significent musical experiences prior to THE MOSS ?
We’re all in our 30s. We’ve been in bands for many years. Most notably, Ben was in noise/punk killers, The Hunches. Ben and I basically learned to play our instruments together while in college. Then we dropped out of school to live the banal and fruitless lives of underground rock musicians. We played in a garage punk band called The Real Pills for about 6 years. Beth and Tony have both been in several bands as well. Beth has a really broad range of experience and instruments. Tony was one of those teenage guitar shredders. He still uses the same guitar.

It is hardly imaginable that you recorded "wulfram" just 6 months after you formed the band, did you have most or some of the songs composed before ? if not how did you manage to put out so quickly such mature stuff, did you rehearse that intensively ?
It was a little longer than 6 months. I had a few of those songs kicking around in my head long before the band formed. Ben and I would get together and play them for a few months, and we’d listen to Deep Purple and Leaf Hound and try to hunt down all the heavy bands we could find. It all came together quite effortlessly once Beth and Tony joined us. I usually write fairly complete songs, then the rest of the band adds the magic when we practice. Because we’re all busy with other aspects of our lives, we work hard to make our time together as a band productive.

There's two instrumentals like an intro and outro to "Fell Hand" which is the longest song of the album, the album then ends in a very particular mystical ambiance... like a last minute to close your eyes, reflect, feel, being definitely conscious about the fantastic 40 previous minutes... this is a perfect outro really ! how did you feel it necessary to cut that in three songs ? there's two other instrumentals on "wulfram", do you compose an instrumental song with the idea of introducing an ambiance for next song or like a transition between two songs or just consider it as a full distinct song ?
We listen to soundtrack music like Morricone and Goblin as well as some early Italian and German prog. We wanted to give the album a little more depth because we tend to be pretty straight ahead most of the time. We picked melodies out of a couple of the songs and wrote them as interludes to break up the pace of record.

Your songs include all the components of great and original 70's heavy rock one can expect, but they're amazingly quite short in average, which gives an impression of a rather direct approach, do your new songs show an evolution towards this, can we imagine something a bit different, maybe more progressive for example ?
Ben and I have talked about song length many times. We always joke that the listener falls asleep after 4 minutes. Maybe that’s just us. We come from a 60s rock/soul and punk background, so we’re most used to 3 minute songs. Our new songs are a little more prog sometimes, and we’ll continue to play with dynamics and introducing different instrumentation, but we really like to keep the impact of the song pretty direct. We’re all about writing the riff, and if you write in too many changes, the impact of the riff can get lost as we see it.

What about live gigs ? Do you like to be jamming and play longer versions of the songs live ? Am I wrong if I say that you seem to have not much played yet in a doom/Stoner environment ? I know that you're in relation with Ron Rochondo, couldn't a killer gig with he mighty Ice Dragon be settled in the area in a near future ?
We don’t jam much live. There are a couple spots where we can extend a song, but most of the time we’re trying to play really hard with few breaks or jams. You are not wrong – we have a bunch of great heavy bands here in town, but we don’t end up playing with them that much yet. I hope that’ll change, but Portland has a zillion bands and they’re all doing their own thing and it can be a little insular at times. I would love to play with Ice Dragon! I only know them through a couple exchanges, but I think they’re one of the coolest doom bands for years.

You're actually working on the cover art of the (new) album, it looks like you'd like something pretty oniric/dreamlike and mysterious ?
That cover art is for the official release of Wulfram. We never intended to self-release the album, but putting it online seemed to finally attract some attention as opposed to just mailing it to labels. I have been trying to learn how to paint, and was deeply influenced by fantasy art like Frank Frazetta and Roger Dean as a kid. The cover art is my best attempt to pay tribute. Thematically it relates to the story of Wulfram which is a concept album. This winter we’ll start recording the new album. What's your opinion on Ozzy and his buddies reforming the original B.S. 33 years later ? Who would you see as the lucky opener(s) for this major tour in 2012 ?

You guys like to use your logo with strange photos or drawings like a skeleton horse for example, it's always strange and original... do you have precise ideas of what you look for in advance or ... ? Do you know the blog of the great band NAAM (http://naammusic.tumblr.com/) ?
I could spend all my time drawing, working on art and looking at art. It’s a fun aspect of being in a band – I have a theme I can work around. When I’m creating the art, or if I’m using a found photo, I want it to impart the same feelings that our music does. A little foreboding, intense and strange. Wow, we know of NAAM, but now we know of the blog!

Contrary to some other bands, one can not reproach you for sounding exactly like Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin or Jethro Tull mixed with Black Sabbath or ... you certainly dig both B.S. and LZ very much but your influences are more obscure and not so obvious... how do you consider this ?
That’s the best compliment we could hope for. We all love Sabbath and Zeppelin, but we’ve listened to them all our lives. I feel like those are baseline influences if you’re into heavy rock. In this band, we have tried to transcend just paying tribute to the bands we love, and actually embody the songwriting goals of someone just discovering that a sense of evil or discordance or drama can be conveyed by loud guitars and drums and a whiny singer. We listen to a lot of bands from that late sixties/early seventies era both well-known and pretty obscure. We try to break down what influenced them and the way they make us feel. We think this is a better way to express your influences than simply writing songs that mimic them.

You seem to be very interested by/invested in many various passions (ancestral and scientific practices, old crafts...); do you practise particularly any of them ? could any of them give some special strenght to the band's identity ?
This relates to the previous question somewhat. If we immerse ourselves in a broad spectrum of activities – from the thrill of gathering fungus in the ancient woods to hunting an elk with a stone blade that we made ourselves, breaking open a geode to receive its energy, or discovering the secrets of the animists and the spiritualists and seekers of limits, we can better express a spectrum of feelings in our songs.

The song "la cantina" sounds a bit different to my ears from the rest of the album, kinda Desert Rock type, reminding old stuff from EAGLES OF DEATH METAL, any taste for such stuff or am I wrong ?
We don’t listen to a lot of desert rock really. Personally, I’m not sure I’ve ever listened the Eagles of Death Metal. La Cantina was an attempt at something between ZZ Top and Deep Purple. It was the first song to be dropped from our live set, mostly because it doesn’t fit the others as well. We are influenced by blues and blues-based rock, but so many bands have done it to death or done a poor job of it that we don’t want to rehash it too much.

Could you explain in detail "the power of the ancient art of pogonomancy to foresee future events" ?! personnaly I'm not, but do you feel you have enough experience to make a drastic difference with proctomancy ?
Ha ha ha ha. We do eat a lot of tacos before we play, but the study of beards and the power within holds more sway than proctomancy. Also, we have occasionally experienced first-hand the odic emanations of a venerable beard.

What's your opinion on Ozzy and his buddies reforming the original B.S. 33 years later ? Who would you see as the lucky opener(s) for this major tour in 2012 ?
I think it’s pretty cool. I have mostly given up on reunion shows because I don’t want my precious impression of a band destroyed by silk shirts and river sandals, but Sabbath seems like they’ll stick to the basics. Hmmmmm, I dunno, Electric Wizard and Danava would be my picks perhaps.

I've read that you're looking for preferably a US label to release "Wulfram" on vinyl, this despite European offers... is it mainly about postal costs which in some way become a real problem for both camps, which in definitive promotes digital purchase in fact... can you explain your position please ?
Yeah we figured it’d be easier to get it in people’s hands affordably if it is printed over here. But really, we’re happy to have anyone print it on vinyl. We’re working on it with a European label, so keep yer eyes peeled. We’d just like it to find its way into appreciating ears holes. Any way that happens, we’re happy.

Are you conscious that you can appeal to a large part of the actual doom and stoner audience ? Is there a real distinct scene for 70's heavy rock stuff in your opinion ?
We haven’t noticed too much of a scene with the hard rock stuff. There are always bands doing it, for better or worse, but it doesn’t seem real cohesive like the doom and stoner worlds. We feel like we fit in well with bands like Graveyard, Blood Ceremony, Danava, Uncle Acid, Witch and Witchcraft to name a few. I am encouraged that there are other great bands out there doing things that we like. We’ve been pleasantly surprised that the stoner/doom community is paying us much attention. To me, Sabbath is as heavy as I ever need rock to be. I’m glad that there are plenty of people who recognize that heavy does not necessarily mean down-tuned guitars or gruff vocals or exaggerated displays of manliness.

Well, thanx a lot  Adam for your time and all the best to THE MOSS, add something if you wish...
Thanx Steph ! With respect to the band Moss in the UK, we are changing our name. We’ll keep you posted when we find the right one.

"Sabbadaius Sabbatum" : new song by CATHEDRAL !!!

"Sabbadaius Sabbatum", this song is the B-Side to forthcoming limited edition vinyl only 12" single 'A New Ice Age' released via Rise Above

Signed on Profound Lore rds, EVOKEN and OCCULTATION presently entering the studio

The two latest bands to join the label, namely EVOKEN and OCCULTATION, have been/are entering the studio this week to lay down what will serve as their next full-length albums that shall engulf the light spring 2012.

It has been agreed upon that PROFOUND LORE rds will be releasing the next full-length album from legendary doom metal behemoth EVOKEN. One of the pinnacle and most influential bands that have helped set the standard for colossal atmospheric funeral-esque death/doom metal, EVOKEN have carefully crafted, over the last year, what could very well be their ultimate glorious moment within their illustrious repertoire. The band's follow-up to 2007's "A Caress Of The Void" will be their fifth and most significant full-length album to date.
First three dates booked for the studio were November 11/12/13.

OCCULTATION are a bizarre entity of pure psychedelic cinematic cathedral-like horror metal from Brooklyn, NY that incorporate such sounds culled from '70s prog, cult horror soundtrack, classic '80s dark rock, and classic metal respectively to create eerie and surreal dirge-like rituals that can only conjure the stuff that nightmares are made of. OCCULTATION features NEGATIVE PLANE guitarist Nameless Void amongst their ranks, and those familiar with one of the most important bands in black metal today will feel the familiarity with the cloth that OCCULTATION don. Earlier this year, the band released the excellent  "Somber Dawn" 7" on Withces Tone and will see their debut album released in North America (Invictus Productions is the European conspirator) likewise spring 2012."

an interview with OTIS REAPER from the doomed wastelands of Tennessee

A part of you readers are now used to my tastes and way to work for T.O.P., not just about great wellknown names or rising stars from the scene that you can read almost everywhere... The blog is mostly focused on Doom but there's absolutely no calculation towards this in general, I didn't tell myself "well after a sludge band like HOLLOW LEG, I should now maybe do something with a big Doom band or some good Stoner to get high views this week-end"...
I'm not professionnal at all and to tell the truth don't like much to just review an album or a demo; if I had more time I would make an interview everyday, it's definitely more interesting to read about what a band has to say and let them convince you by themselves to get into their sound, than what I have to say subjectively about their music ! No, this is done with heart and passion, I discover some new stuff that often brings me questions to satisfy my natural curiosity and then just enjoy to share things with other people who live for underground metal too. So the only feeling I had in mind yesterday (and another one could have been hardly possible) was to know more about the Original and Ripping : OTIS REAPER !!!
Don't know them yet ? Take some time to and you'll quickly get addicted to them... Cause believe me, from the (musically) not so confidential state of Tennessee, this young quartet delivers a pretty unique sound, basically SLUDGE by its powerful crudeness and bluesy southern catchiness mix together, but enriched with multiple influences from various kind of extreme METAL !
The vocals are amazingly insane, from blackened thrash to ugly and vicious sludge typed, but this is not just the very particular originality of the band, because the guitars sound and approach is definitely something that give too an enormous strenght to the band's identity, with generally constant twisted, groovy and catchy riffs, full of spicy flavour and smooth euphoria.
Now read what these dudes and dudette have collectively answered and DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR : SUPPORT the OTIS REAPER !

* Could you please present quickly OTIS REAPER ? The band’s name is awesome, where did you get the idea from ?
Otis Reaper is Ben, Madison, Jay and Cres. Jay, our singer, came up w/the name Otis Reaper because he said he wanted to start a band that sounded like Otis Redding crossed with Grim Reaper. We didn't really have much more direction than that for about a year. We just jammed a bunch and practices usually degenerated into 30-45 minutes of actual jamming and at least 3-4 hours of grilling out, drinking beer, partying and talking about metal. During this time we went through a couple potential bass players but nothing really worked out as far as scheduling and logistical stuff until Madison came into the fold. By that time we had most of the songs on the demo down pretty tight between just Jay, Cres and I so it was pretty easy to get the ball rolling and he learned the songs very quickly. We started playing shows soon after.

* You guys seem to be or have been involved in several other bands, listening to your pretty unique style, could we in some way consider that the O.R. music represent a synthesis of your various musical experiences ?
Yeah, we listen to it all. Just the metal and punk culture in general is a huge influence on Otis Reaper's sound and attitude. I'm personally a huge fan of all these bands that existed in that time when thrash, black metal, death metal, etc. were all coming into their own and stuff was still hard to categorize. Like, was Venom the first black metal band or just a sleazy rock n' roll band? Many of the older heavy rock and doom bands fall into the same place of just being hard to categorize because they were expressing their influences in a way no one else had done before. Nowadays that stuff is documented to death and sub-genrified to every little detail, but they cast the mold. Otis Reaper has always been about paying homage to the underdogs of the scene and many of the forgotten demo bands that were killer but just never really went anywhere outside of very small circles.

* If I’m not wrong the actual cassette ep co-released by Inherent rds and Failed Recordings is a new edition of the sold-out CD which was including the “footprints in dead earth” and “graveyard sorcery” eps… were those ever released on vynil previously or was it more exactly demos… ?
No release on vinyl yet. We had been planning it from the beginning but funds are still working themselves out. We are still going to do it. It has just been taking longer than we had hoped. The cassette released by Inherent/Failed is the first "official" Otis Reaper release. We have made a couple batches of cd's on our own in runs of 50 or so each and sold all but 4 or 5 of them. Jay and Cres also took a bunch to the Philippines last month for some distros over there.

 * You gave a fair number of gigs in the first part of 2011 but announced by mid-july that there won’t be anymore gigs until the end of the year, any particular reason about that ? What’s the biggest gig you took part in so far ? Do you think the “gutfest” could become a regular event and how did you enjoy this first local metal fest ?
Our singer and drummer are married and having a baby, so that is the reason for the hiatus. We are trying to get some more shows around the first part of 2012 once their family life begins to settle down and get in a routine. We haven't really played any big shows yet, mostly just diy shows we set up here in town or basement shows and stuff in other cities. In the past year we've had the opportunity to play w/some sick bands though. Gut Fest is a prime example of this. We had Process of Suffocation, a sick old-school death metal band from Memphis,Part Death from Maryland, Epoch of Unlight from Memphis, Sons of Tonatiuh from Atlanta, Black Pussy from Vicksburg, Dead-I-On from Memphis, Argentinum Astrum from Knoxville and many more. Do yourself a favor and look some of these bands up! We played a basement show at Anarchtica in Chattanooga with Pallbearer from Little Rock and Anhedonist from Seattle. That was probably my favorite show from a spectator's perspective and i'm glad we were playing first if you know what I mean.

On FB you’ve an album called “we love the womerns” with very beautiful girls wearing your T-shirts… did you just select the most beautiful or are they all as exciting around ?! You’ve yet done numerous different models of merchandising, seems great quality and nice designs with even flashy colors for some, do you have any facilities for that ?
Yea, Jay makes most of those shirts at work. I believe most of them are one-offs. He convinced his boss to buy some design software and printing equipment and now he is bootleggin' band stickers and Otis Reaper shirts like a motherfucker!

* Could you speak about your newest composition ? how do you think the band’s sound evolutes with time passing ? Any project for an album now ?
We have about 8 more songs now that are keepers. There are two that didn't make it onto the first recording because we didn't have time to get around to them in the studio and then about 6 new jams. We plan to record them as soon as we can, sometime early 2012 hopefully. We hope to have enough by then for an album and maybe a couple splits w/friends of ours' bands. I guess that all depends on how the tracks flow together once we get them recorded. We've got some ideas but nothing official has yet to be determined.

 * Your musical style is rather hard to describe, I’ve read about a mix between WEEDEATER and DIXIE WITCH which is quite fair but the vocals and a song like “unspeakable acts of intoxication” have a crusty black thrash taste that is fuckin awesome, it just seems that OTIS REAPER takes all that is good in almost all extreme metal forms and ultimately mix it without too much calculation, am I wrong ?

We were not necessarily going for any sound in particular and though we come from the South and all share the same obvious influences when it comes to doom and sludge we didn't want to have the typical sound that so many bands just copy shamelessly. It's pretty easy to determine what our influences are, yet i think we also have our own style. I think that's a good thing and definitely take your description as a compliment. We could just chug out some eyehategod or neurosis riffs and be way more popular but we strive to keep it diverse without being too gimmicky or anything.

* That’s not really surprising when I have a look on all the various types of stuff that you listen, from Brasilian blackened thrash from the late 80’s to grind stuff, not forgetting doom of course… I even feel there’s an amazing little south American taste in the song “unspeakable acts of …” , which’s a bit surprising considering you’re pretty young and have not lived this period, how did it he come that you’ve been connected to these obscure sounds ?
Yea, "Unspeakable Acts..." definitely has a pretty heavy Sextrash or Sarcofago vibe and influence w/the way composition and lyrics are arranged, with a bit of added groove and crossover style vocal chants in the chorus. It's definitely the odd-ball song in our set, but somehow we manage to make it fit our style and make sense with the rest of our stuff. Some of our newer songs will expand on that faster, more upbeat and thrashy direction so hopefully people like them as well.

* What does France evokes to you ? Do you feel attracted by any European country in particular ?
France is killer! We just set up a house show for The Pledge of Cain from Strasbourg here in town and it was amazing having these French guys show up and lay waste to a living room crammed full of rowdy people. Churches Burn from Ohio also played and were amazing. I can't think of many other french bands off the top of my head. I'm a big Blut Aus Nord fan and recently have been spinning that Cauchemar record pretty regularly. They have a cool, retro vibe and something about the female vocals sung in French is just really mesmerizing. Europe in general has the best metal, of course but lots of stateside bands are (and always have been) at the forefront of new heavy sounds as well. (note : CAUCHEMAR are Canadians -from Quebec-)

* Thanx a lot Ben, all the best to O.R., could you now please tell anyone what’s your actual merchandise for sale + add something if you want
Otis Reaper casettes are available from www.inherentrecords.com and http://failedrecordings.bigcartel.com/

We are going to be doing a short run of longsleeve shirts as well w/the artwork from our cassette. Other than that I have just been writing a lot and getting ready to start rehearsing, playing shows and recording again as soon as Jay and Cres' spawning ritual is complete.

vynil release of KINGS DESTROY "and the rest will surely perish" announced for early 2012

KINGS DESTROY has announced that "And the Rest Will Surely Perish" (released on CD by The Maple Forum) will see its long-awaited vinyl release in early 2012 via Hydro-Phonic records (Black Pyramid, Sourvein, etc).

After their next show with PREMONITION 13 and THE GATES OF SLUMBER in NY, the band will hit the studio later this month to demo songs for its sophomore album and follow up to this celebrated and heavy-handed debut that the Village Voice described as "Fueled mainly by Sabbath's grooves, Sleep's foggy haze, and Yob's oppressive thunder" !!!

KINGS DESTROY is also working to find opportunities for some European dates next year, nothing sure yet confirmed but anyone who could help the band should take contact (Germany, Holland, Belgium, United Kingdom, etc...) !

In case you're new here and/or don't have read it yet, here's the link of the nice interview I did with Steve Murphy (vocals) about 2 months ago : http://templeofperdition.blogspot.com/2011/08/interview-with-nyc-doomsters-kings.html

and finally, just for the pleasure, here's again the video for the song "Mountie" :

interview with Florida sludge masters : HOLLOW LEG

Despite the fact that their debut album "instinct" has been released almost one year ago, I just got recently into HOLLOW LEG but since then I must reckon that there's not a day where I don't listen at least twice this incredible masterpiece.
It's maybe a bit subjective sometimes to put labels on a band's music and can even lead to little contradictions, but this time believe me we got here a band that has really took the best from SLUDGE, STONER and DOOM to concoct an explosive mixture of sheer heaviness and grooving power with some of the most insane vocals that can be heard actually in the scene. The beast is raging, powerful and extremely sleek, menacing but beautifully aesthetic... If you haven't got yet "instinct" in your sick collection, I conjure you with the highest solemnity to catch this mistake right now !
It soon became obvious and urgent to ask Brent and Tim a few questions about the album and all the good shit that happened to HOLLOW LEG this year :

*About a year after its release, what’s your look now on « instinct » ? How has been the response to this debut ? What would you say to people who spite on digital purchase via bandcamp ?

WE STILL REALLY LIKE THE SONGS AS WELL AS THE RECORDING. AS FAR AS FIRST RECORDS GO, WE'RE VERY PROUD. THE RECORD IS AVAILABLE ON BANDCAMP SO THAT ANYONE WHO'S INTERESTED IN THE MUSIC CAN GET THE RECORD, IF YOU'RE ONE OF THOSE WHO'VE PURCHASED THE DIGITAL DOWNLOAD, THANK YOU. WE JUST WANT PEOPLE TO HAVE ACCESS TO THE MUSIC.

* The band has been during quite some time a duo and the album was recorded this way, did you feel it was necessary to have a full steady line-up when you started to have more and more gigs early this year? Could you please present both new members ? Did their arrival impose new operating or behavior rules ?!
WE WERE ALWAYS COMFORTABLE AS A 2 PIECE, BUT THE OPPORTUNITY CAME UPON US TO JOIN FORCES WITH OUR NEW VOCALIST-SCOTT ANGELACOS AND BASS PLAYER-TOM CROWTHER (ALSO MEMBERS OF JUNIOR BRUCE) AND WE (ALL 4 OF OF US) JUMPED ON IT...NO NEW RULES REALLY, WE JUST HAD TO ADAPT TO ACCOMMODATING MORE PERSONNEL AND LEARN HOW TO MAKE MORE PHONE CALLS.WE WERE FRIENDS FIRST AND STILL ARE. THAT IS ALWAYS IMPORTANT TO US FOR MAKING GOOD MUSIC.

*Why did you choose a bison for the cover of the album ? does this animal represent something special for you ? Do you consider it as the best animal to represent HOLLOW LEG (beautiful, powerful, wild… and intelligent ! this is indeed one of the most intelligent animals with orcas and dolphins) ?
THE BISON IMAGE JUST KIND OF MATERIALIZED OVER TIME...THROUGH WRITING THAT BATCH OF MUSIC, AND ESPECIALLY THE LYRICS TO "INSTINCT," THE SYMBOL OF THE BISON JUST SEEMED FITTING. WE HAD THIS KIND OF NEOLITHIC VIBE HAPPENING BECAUSE IT WAS OUR FIRST EFFORT AND WE WANTED TO INCORPORATE THAT VIBE IN THE ARTWORK. THE BISON WAS A MAJOR SYMBOL IN NEOLITHIC LIFE AND ART, SO IT BECAME A MASCOT OF SORTS FOR "INSTINCT." AND, YES, IT'S ALSO A HUGE BADASS ANIMAL!

*Your song “the return” will be soon appearing in a movie called “veer!”, how did you get this opportunity and do you know some other songs that will be included too ?
IT'S ACTUALLY A TRACK CALLED "THE RETURN" THAT WILL BE APPEARING IN THE FILM...TO MY UNDERSTANDING, SOMEONE WORKING ON THE FILM IS A FAN AND SUGGESTED US FOR A SCENE WHERE THEY NEEDED A HEAVY TRACK...THE FILM IS A STORY ABOUT A SKATEBOARDER FROM JACKSONVILLE, AND MOST (IF NOT ALL) THE FILM WAS SHOT HERE, SO I BELIEVE THE FILM FEATURES A LOT OF LOCAL NORTH FLORIDA BANDS.

*You did a cool video clip for the song “the source”, did you had any special help for this ? Did you try to make it played elsewhere than on the net, maybe on local TV or … ?
"THE SOURCE" VIDEO WAS JUST SOMETHING WE PUT TOGETHER FROM FOOTAGE WE HAD COLLECTED OVER THE YEAR OR SO WHILE WE WERE WORKING ON "INSTINCT." IT'S A LOT OF LIVE CLIPS AS WELL AS STUDIO CLIPS AND JUST RANDOM SHOTS OF US. WE DIDN'T REALLY HAVE ANY ASPIRATIONS FOR THE VIDEO, JUST MORE FOR FUN AND TO GIVE PEOPLE THAT ARE INTERESTED SOMETHING TO CHECK OUT.

*You played numerous shows this year, is there any club from Florida left that hasn’t been infected yet by HOLLOW LEG’s sound ? Were the tours with SHROUD EATER and OMEAN self-organized ? Which parts of the States would you like to play in “in priority” next ?
THERE ARE SO MANY LITTLE SHACKS TO PLAY IN HERE IN FLORIDA IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO HIT ALL OF THEM, BUT WE'VE MADE A DENT IN OUR HOME STATE FOR SURE, A FEW TIMES OVER ACTUALLY! YES, WE SELF-ORGANIZED THOSE TOURS, WITH SOME HELP FROM LOCAL AREA BANDS/PROMOTERS. WE WOULD LOVE
TO PLAY THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST, AND SINCE TIM (DRUMS) AND I ARE BOTH ORIGINALLY FROM NEW ENGLAND, PLAYING THAT AREA WOULD BE GREAT TOO. WE'VE MADE MOVES TO GET UP THERE, BUT HAVEN'T YET GOTTEN THAT FAR NORTH YET.

*You recently played more important gigs with YOB and DARK CASTLE, also last month with KEN MODE and THE ATLAS MOTH, did you feel more pressure than usually for these gigs ? How did you enjoy them ?

ALL GIGS ARE IMPORTANT, BUT THOSE WERE CERTAINLY MORE FUN SHOWS. WE'VE KNOWN DARK CASTLE AND THE ATLAS MOTH FOR A WHILE NOW AND ALWAYS LOVE SEEING THOSE BANDS, AND YOB AND KEN MODE WERE REALLY GREAT GUYS TO MEET AND GREAT BANDS TO SEE LIVE. IT WAS A GREAT TIME SHARING A STAGE WITH BANDS LIKE THAT. ANYTIME THE COLLECTIVE VIBE IS LOUD, HEAVY, AND FUN,WE FIT RIGHT IN.

* Could you speak about some new songs please ? Did the addition of two new musicians change anything in your way of composition ?
ADDING SCOTT AND TOM TO THE MIX HAS DEFINITELY OPENED NEW DOORS FOR US AS FAR AS BEING ABLE TO PLAY A BIT MORE WITH DYNAMICS AND DIFFERENT STYLES OF WRITING THAT WE MAY HAVE STEERED AWAY FROM IN THE PAST DUE TO OUR ONLY BEING 2, BUT IT'S STILL VERY HOLLOW LEG. WE'RE NOT GOING TO GIVE YOU A DIFFERENT BAND ANYTIME SOON, JUST A LOUDER ONE!

*Your sound is pretty original, I mean this is for me one of the most perfect blend of sludge, stoner and doom one can ever expect; I know nothing is premeditated, but how do you manage to mix all that so tightly and from which type of these musics would you feel the more close ?
FROM THE ORIGIN OF HOLLOW LEG, THE FOCUS FOR THE MUSIC HAS BEEN ON THE RIFFS AND GROOVE OF THE RIFFS. WE ALL LISTEN TO A TON OF DIFFERENT MUSIC, AND I DON'T KNOW OR THINK ANY ONE STYLE IS MORE CLOSE THAN ANY OTHER. WELL, MAYBE BLACK SABBATH, BUT THEY ALSO INCORPORATE ALL THOSE SOUNDS YOU MENTIONED, OR RATHER ALL THOSE SOUNDS DERIVE FROM SABBATH IN SOME WAY, BUT WE COME FROM OUR ROOTS IN EARLY METAL (SABBATH,METALLICA, SLAYER, MOTORHEAD, PRIEST, AC/DC, MAIDEN). THEN AS ,WE GOT INTO OUR TEENS THE HARDCORE PUNK CAME CREEPING IN BECAUSE IT IS SO ACCESSIBLE AT THAT AGE. THEN CAME MORE EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC AND THEN WE STARTED TO DISCOVER A BUNCH OF OTHER GENRES AND STYLES. BUT IT ALL COMES BACK AROUND, IT'S ALL A PART OF US, AND WE JUST REALLY LOVE MUSIC IN GENERAL. FOR WHAT WE CHOOSE TO PLAY, WE JUST LOVE HEAVY MUSIC, HEAVY RIFFS, AND HEAVY RYHTHMS, AND DO NOT CARE HOW PEOPLE LABEL US.

* While remaining always extremely heavy, your music eyes sometimes  on some groovy psychedelic fields, can we imagine a development on that waywith…. some clean vocals ?!
IT'LL BE HOLLOW LEG BUT VOCALS WILL BE DIFFERENT BECAUSE WE HAVE AN EXCELLENT NEW VOCALIST. IT'LL BE AS HEAVY AND RIFFY AS "INSTINCT" FOR CERTAIN!

*Florida was known about 20 years ago for its death metal scene, what’s the most popular underground metal style these days ? Who are the most interesting doom/sludge/stoner bands around ? Can you speak a bit about “Orlandoom” promotions ?
DEATH METAL AND ITS SUBGENRES ARE STILL VERY POPULAR HERE IN FLORIDA. THERE'S NOT A HUGE DOWNTEMPO METAL SCENE IN FLORIDA, ALTHOUGH NEW BANDS ARE SPROUTING UP ALL THE TIME, BUT CERTAINLY DARK CASTLE ARE LEADING THE WAY FOR THE DOOMIER FLORIDA BANDS, AS WELL AS JUNIOR
BRUCE, SHROUD EATER, SIX DEAD HORSES, FIRE IN THE CAVE, ETHER, DEMONS, FLYINGSNAKES, TOWER, SHITDANG, AND A FEW OTHERS. ORLANDOOOM PUT ON GREAT SHOWS IN THE ORLANDO AREA-THEY'RE STANDUP DUDES AND REALLY TAKE CARE OF BANDS-THEY'RE GOOD FRIENDS, WE APPRECIATE THEM, AND THEY'VE BEEN A HUGE HELP TO HOLLOW LEG IN THE LAST COUPLE YEARS. PEOPLE FORGET HOW HUGE THE STATE OF FLORIDA IS, AND THERE IS CONTINUALLY GREAT MUSIC HERE BUT THERE IS NO ONE DEFINED SCENE LIKE "DEATH METAL" OR "STONER METAL" TO CURRENTLY OR ACCURATELY LABELTHE ENTIRE STATE. ONE FACT IS CERTAIN: FLORIDA, AND THE SOUTH FOR THAT MATTER, CERTAINLY LIKES ITS MUSIC HEAVY AND DIRTY.

*When can expect you guys to record for the sophomore album ? Will it still be self-released ?
WE'RE ABOUT 3/4 THROUGH THE WRITING PROCESS FOR A NEW RECORD. WE'VE GOT A DATE TO START DEMOING TRACKS IN EARLY DECEMBER, IF WE KEEP WORKING AT THE CURRENT PACE, I'D SAY WE CAN BEGIN LAYING DOWN TRACKS FOR THE NEXT RECORD AS EARLY AS APRIL. IT LOOKS LIKE WE'RE GOING TO BE PLAYING SOME SHOWS IN JANUARY AND AGAIN IN MARCH, SO PROBABLY AFTER THE MARCH RUN WE CAN BEGIN TRACKING. IF ALL GOES WELL THE NEXT RECORD WILL MOST LIKELY NOT BE SELF-RELEASED.

*Thanx a lot guys, all the best to you, add something if you wish !
THANKS TO YOU AS WELL, AND THANK YOU TO EVERYONE READING THIS AND THEN LISTENING TO US FOR THE FIRST TIME... AND IF YOU WERE ALREADY LISTENING, THANK YOU, AND KEEP LISTENING, BECAUSE IT IS ONLY GETTING BIGGER AND BETTER.

Heavy Days In Doomtown fest 2012 - a DIY celebration of all things slow and heavy

Here come all the updated infos about this nice new festival that will happen next May in Copenhagen (Den) :

" We are an association called "Undergrundsmusikens Fremme" (translated: Undergroundmusic promotion) based in Copenhagen, Denmark. The association has for the past two years been organizing the suucesful DIY Death Metal Festival "Kill-Town Death Fest" (www.killtowndeathfest.dk). Now new people and new ides has come to the association and therefore we decided to start a new initiative.

We're in the process of setting up a brand new music festival in May 2012 called "Heavy Days In Doomtown - a DIY celebration of all things slow and heavy", a festival which is gonna represent a wide spectrum of musical genres, such as doom, sludge, stonerrock, psych, heavyrock and more.

The festival is gonna last 4 days at 3 different venues in Copenhagen:

-a warmup show at the alternative venue Stengade, Stengade 18 (www.stengade.com)

-2 days of music, art, events and madness at the DIY activist driven social centre Ungdomshuset, Dortheavej 61 (www.dortheavej-61.com)

- a cooldown show in Copenhagens freetown Christianias finest rockclub Loppen (www.loppen.com)

The festival is organized DIY which means that neither the organizers, the bands, or the people who runs the fest are making profit, and our main purpose besides having an amazing fest full of heavy music, is to promote the DIY principles to the genres who usually don't organize this way.

This is done by showing that things can be done professionally and with passion for both good sounds, good treatment for bands and artists, good music, along with keeping it DIY and anti-commercial.

Besides music, we're inviting a bunch of great artists to come and make installations, visuals and more before and during the festival to make the expeirence of the fest visual as well as musical.

We're still in the process of choosing and booking bands and putting together the details for the fest, so this is HEADS UP of whats coming, and to let you know that things are getting heavy in Copenhagen May 2012...

"Little Things" new ep by HOOKA HEY

"Little Things", new EP from HOOKA HEY, heavy power blues band from Paris, is digitally available right now on iTunes.

Expect here some top notch Heavy blues, folk music and power-rock with intense riffs, Hooka Hey sounds like a mix between 70's and 90's with a contemporary production by Yarol Poupaud.

Three songs ("hush me", "little things" and "bad mama") between Led Zeppelin, Neil Young and The White Stripes announcing a new full length album (their 2nd) scheduled for 2012.

HOOKA HEY has a real personnality, this is not traditionnal Stoner, nor just 70's bluesy Rock or Grunge... a blend of all this put together without any metal overtones !

Vocals by Hugo Parrish (also on guitars and founder of the band) are impressive, not the kind of average french accent singing type that we too often have to deplore here, it seems like if english was his mother tongue, this is just perfect with lots of hot rockin' vibes and charism !!! Musically this is very tightly played, the riff on "hush me" is pretty thick and groovy, while "little things" sounds amazingly bluesy and "bad mama" comes straight from the hellish 70's...

In waiting for this upcoming recording, Hooka Hey has also released not only one but two music videos for their single "Hush me" on youtube and Vimeo; have a look on both, this is really very professional work !!!

Fans of The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Queens of the Stone Age, Soundgarden, Them Crooked Vultures... should check this out blindly and other open-minded people who enjoy energetic and catchy but refined music should try to give them an attentive listen.

crushing death/doom from Finland : SOLOTHUS

Gosh, it seems that the finnish scene actually makes proof of an active revival, honouring the godly ancients from the late 80's/early 90's for the greatest pleasure of crushing death/doom fans... Even if they also claim their roots in the legacy of  such bands as ABHORRENCE  and DEMIGOD (along with others like BOLT THROWER, AUTOPSY and ASPHYX),  I would range this young quartet (seriously active since early 2010) much closer to HOODED MENACE than KRYPTS or their fellows STENCH OF DECAY, understand you have to forget any blastbeats here (even if the song "throne of bones" shreds pretty much !!!)...
Released just a few days ago, the debut demo from SOLOTHUS contains 3 songs : "Darkness Gathers here at Night", "Cold Embrace" and "Throne of bones". The sound is pretty good, all instruments being correctly listenable; we've got here crushing mid to slow down-tuned tempos, nicely creeping and crawling  with cavernous vocals which remind a bit the ones of Oula Kerkela (live singer from H.M.).
A slight but sufficiently significant CANDLEMASS influence can be heard too, through nice melodies and amazing solos, tending to give musically a real doom metal edge in some parts (1st song especially) and  showing some very solid abilities from the guitarist in the epic field, that should be in my opinion developped in the future ...
This globally sounds fuckin good, catchy, raw, haunting, twisted and often ugly at the same time !
My only serious complaint would concern the vocals in the epic parts, I feel they are too systematically growled the same way, which creates a too important gap with the melodies, exactly what I would reproach to Oula K. too, contrarly to Lasse Pyykkö who sings on HM's studio stuff with more harmony, nuances and deepness. But this has nothing redhibitory at all, especially considering this is the band's first recording this can be certainly improved with time and experience and that doesn't prevent me at all to think that  SOLOTHUS has an  awesome potencial and will be definitely a name to count on in the near future...

"Servants of Chaos" CIRITH UNGOL double cd/dvd announced !!!

GREAT news about CIRITH UNGOL from METAL BLADE rds :

"Servants of Chaos" available North America for the first time; pressed on triple vinyl in Europe
Ventura, CA's Cirith Ungol, one of the most underrated bands from the early 80s metal scene, released four albums between 1980 and 1991. Cirith Ungol's catalogue is being celebrated through the release of a collection of rare and live tracks on the 2 CD/1 DVD album, Servants of Chaos.
Servants was originally released exclusively in Europe back in 2001 and has finally been pressed in North America and a DVD has been added to augment the already stellar collection of music. The DVD contains an entire, rarely seen live show, shot on November 9th, 1984 at the storied, and now defunct, Wolf & Rissmiller's Country Club in Reseda, CA. The CD/DVD will be available on January 31st, 2012 in North America and on triple vinyl in Europe on November 7th, 2011.

The name Cirith Ungol is pronounced "kirith ungol" and is an Elvish phrase meaning "pass of the spider", which is something that Lord of the Rings fans will surely recognize. The name is, of course, indicative of the band's fantasy-oriented lyrics, themes and beautiful album artwork.
