an interview with Mikael "Mr PENTAGRAM chest" Olofsson

You probably have that in mind now : I love to do interviews !!! not only with musicians, but also with people that keep the scene alive through various connected activities and their immense passion for DOOM... One of the guys that correspond the most exactly to this profile is Mikael Olofsson from Sweden, passionate for more than 30 years by all forms of Obscure UG Metal with a growing emphasis on Doom over the years. Michael is not just one of the best connoisseurs of the genre, he also makes nice videos and will be soon starting a radioshow...watch out for his works !
The idea of interviewing Mikael took form after we met last month at Roadburn, thanx to him for accepting and having been so interesting \m/

Hi Mikael, a part of the readers know your name, that you come from Sweden, are around 40 years old and one of the most passionate Doom fan in this fucking world but could you present yourself briefly please ? How did come you to Hard rock / Metal ?
Hi Stéphane, You and Temple Of Perdition are very cool and Doom dedicated so im very honored and excited about this interview.
I was born 1970 in Sweden, i am an only child. My parents named me after Rolling Stones, my second name is the drummer of Stones :),
I grew up listening only to loud rock and RNB: The Rolling Stones, Troggs, Kinks, The Who, Angry Young Them and that kind of music were all i heard, i listened to did this and read/looked at pictures in Horror comixs all untill 1975.
I was then five and traded a Hard rock record for a child nursery rime record (with my next door neighbour, she had just won it at a tombola at a fair and thought it sounded horrible she were Four years old)
For me it has been Love at first sight, i took one look at the record cover, then thinked to myself: i got to have that ! It was Kiss - Kiss from that day on i been a Hard Rock and Metal fan, got my first Black Sabbath vinyl in 77.
In the 90s I went to see all the good Thrash and Death Metal bands but still Black Sabbath were my favourite band, and have been so since 1977.

You discovered the underground in the mid/late 80's with the explosion of DM, like many metallers of our generation, but you had the luck to kind of live it from the inside with your friends of MORBID and ENTOMBED… only good memories I presume ? How is the scene now in Stockholm ? Is there a common interest from Metallers to DM and DOOM or do you feel this is 2 different worlds ?
Stockholm had a rather small Brutal Metal fan base in the beginning. We were only a few into this music in Stockholm, we had only one place to go to and that were the only hard rock record shop in Town: Heavy Sounds (for people intrested in how the store looked like go to Youtube type in: Quorthon signing in Stockholm 1987)
So we all meet there and at all the gigs and that way we got to know one another.
Candlemass got popular in Swedish press because Kerrang liked em, all the sudden they played everywhere and they were not always liked by everyone at the Thrash scene, they still had alot of fans among the DM kids back then. And everyone was into Mercyful Fate, Celtic Frost, Hellhammer and  bands with doom elements.

How and when did you come to DOOM ? Do you remember when you heard DOOM for the first time, was it CANDLEMASS or ST VITUS or … ? Did it become instantaneously your fave genre or did it take time to mature ?
Doom matured into my favourite music over the years, but have at the same time always been a part of my music taste, been a Black Sabbath fan all my life.
First doom bands I got to see live must have been: Stormvarning, Count Raven, Candlemass, Sorcerer, In the Colonnade, Stillborn and Cathedral
All my life I have listened alot to bands like: In the Colonnade, Sorcerer, Stillborn, Dream Death, Saint Vitus, Count Raven, Witchfinders General, Cirith Ungol without knowing that it were later to be called Doom metal.
I was totally into Stoner Metal in the 90s, bands like Kyuss, Acrimony, sHeavy, Fu Manchu, Sleep, Electric Wizard were what i listened to,
It evolved into a Stoner Doom and Death Doom metal interest for me, and have now evolved into me mostly listening to: Stonerdoom, traditional doom, HM Doom, Occult rock, 70s Hard rock and proto doom.

One of the reasons I wanted to interview you was because of your (fan) VIDEOS… you did quite many lately with ACRIMONY “Tumuli”, INTERNAL VOID “chasin the dragon”, WAR INJUN “no worry woman”, etc… All those on your youtube channel are pretty recent, what did decide you to start this ? You use Muvee to make your videos, is it the most accessible tool for you ?
I'm a film nerd, and I used to do horror film fanzines and trade vhs in the 90s, so im deeply intrested in trash movies, horror movies or weirdness,
Sometimes back then when me and my mates were drunk, we sometimes redubbed crappy horrors with our vocals recorded on top of the film, by useing 2 vhs and a microphone, or sometimes to fill out video tapes when tradeing we put in funny trailers, cool monster fights, music videos and stuff, i used to record certain cuts and play music on top of it. so for me its a thing i did in the 90s but with better technology. :)
Muvee is a fun and simple to use tool, started doing a video because Weekend Beast needed a music video, because i wanted people to see the guys and how cool they are, while listening to the awesome music.
But after I had finished with the video i started useing the program more and more and i got hooked :)
It's because I see a future of unlimited of combinations of horror films and cool songs :)

Your most successful video is “this will be mine” from YEAR OF THE GOAT which reached more than 1500 views in about two weeks, where all your other videos have much more limited views, do you think that the fact this song is an ADVANCE from their new lp is the main reason of this success and/or do you see it as your most achieved work so far ?
Its like some girls have said to me here on Facebook (hi Abbe and Sarah ;) ) "there's sometimes too much gore in your videos Mikael". So this time I deliberately did very little of that in the video, mostly because I try to have my videos following either the lyrics of the song or the meaning of the song, and "this will be mine"  is about the rise of the morning star and the descend of it , down to earth.

YEAR OF THE GOAT "this will be mine"

For the video of “the rising sun” from RISING DUST, you did choose the movie “Metropolis”… a great prediction of the modern world deviances :( - this is one of your fave movie, why exactly ?
Love old classics movies, always have, I adore movies like: Metropolis, Häxan (witchcraft through the ages), the phantom carriage, Der Golem, the cabinet of Dr Caligari and Nosferatu they all have a very doomy feeling to them as movies. I like them because they feel and look very Doom. I play them with doom metal as soundtrack if i watch em.

Let’s speak now about the WEEKEND BEAST video which includes many many photos of those Doomed guys who are among your closest friends… are they all your photos or did they bring some to your complete your work ? A great part of these photos have been taken in a log-cabin that seems isolated in the woods, is it where the band rehearse ? There’s even one photo where the drums are installed on a terrace, do they sometimes play outside ?!!!
Yeah Weekend Beast are great people and great friends ! everyone of them, they are very easy to get along with and very funny :)
For the first version of the video for King One I used alot of diffrent sources for the pictures to be honest, Sarah Ericksson, my own ones and Weekend Beast own pictures most of them, mixed with some Goatess art and a special hug.
The outdoor terrace drum picture were from the first gig they ever had (and the only gig sofar) theres alot of nice picture in the video from the Birthday party gig.
My second version of King One, have live footage of Weekend beast mixed with the old 1967 classic Ironborder horror film Вий / Viy

                                                       WEEKEND BEAST "king one"

Do you have plans for more videos ? how do those ideas come out : while you watch movies or when you listen to a song that inspire you especially ? do you think some bands could ask you to make something official for them ?
I have plans for lots of videos :)
Yes I do requests, the ones I've done so far and as requests are: The Devil, Year Of The Goat, War Injun, if any band asks me, I will think it over.

You told me that you also lived some time ago in Den Haag (Hol) in a big house full of doomsters including some of the guys of CHURCH OF MISERY… how did that happen exactly ?
It was a magical place ! a squathouse at the old Ministry of Finance, I stayed there and helped out.
When my friend Fast Mike had his club that was called The Morlock Gallery.
At this Squat Motorwolf records had a recordstudio, and warehouse. Motorwolf records and Leafhound Records (japan) were very good friends, so thats why Church Of Misery stayed there.
It was a place for them to hang at, during a Eurotour or for Roadburn festival. COM are all very cool people.
Morlock Gallery was the best club in town, a lot of cool bands play there : Suma, Lucid, Orange Sunshine, High On Fire, Toner Low, Asteroid, Apache, Dzjenghis Khan played there :)

Also you did run a Fanzine in the mid-late 90’s that was dealing with horror movies… could you speak about that too please ?
Black with Mikael Bomark, it were blaxploitation and monsterfilm oriented mostly mixed with weird humour. Done by two Swedish, trying to type in jive, as spoken in the blaxploitations films :)
We were once asked to do a lecture about blaxploitation in Harlem Usa.....dont think they would have liked the 2 Swedish guys that would have shown up, hahaha.
We did meet alot of other cool people by trading fanzines and movies.

                                                      WAR INJUN "no worry woman"

When we met last month at Roadburn, you told me it was your 6th edition there ? How do you see the evolution of this festival throughout the years ? Which were your highlights this year ?
Your fave fest is the Muskelrock in Sweden, what does make it different and so particular ?
Roadburn is Roadburn and its a Shrine to pilgrimage to and keep sacred, but i dont think it should take in more people, as its been a bit crowded this last years.
Roadburn is great specially in meeting new cool people, the sound quality of the live shows are usually very good aswell.
Some of the highlights were: Lord Vicar, Saturnalia Temple, Year Of The Goat, Internal Void, The Obsessed, Sleep, Sigiriya, Huata, Voivod, Witch, Devil, 40 Watt Sun, The Wounded Kings and Bongripper. And meeting alot of my friends :)

Muskel Rock is a very D.I.Y metal fest run by real love for metal, it always have a killer lineup every year!
The stages that exist are one outdoor stage, and one old 196x looking dance palace (the indoor stage)
The fact that it is in the middle of freaking nowhere, next to a cow meadow and a small lake, all of this is very cool (with a rather small crowd) Its a festival for diehards and metalfreaks only.
The festival got the heart in the right place,I never seen a fight or any bad things happening there :)
Another festival I wont miss next year is Heavy Days In Doom Town in Copenhagen it looks very cool, and both Griftegård and Lord Vicar enjoyed that festival alot this year (atleast thats what they told me).

Sweden has always provided lots of great Metal bands but one of its most representative CANDLEMASS is gonna stop now, who do you see as a great successor to them ? Does GHOST get as much success in Sweden as in the States or other foreign countries ? What do you think of these Death Metallers getting success in a very different style... ?
I dont know who will step up and become the biggest Doom band now that Candlemass will stop, but I think it will be one of the band that are mentioned somewhere in this Interview !
It could even be Weekend Beast Or Saturnalia Temple
Ghost won lots of prices in Sweden and been very promted in the Swedish music press so they are popular everywhere. If Ghost makes the young kids discover and later they go out and buy some early Mercyful Fate, King Diamond, Diamond Head, Cloven Hoof, Hell or Satan its all good.
I think its great if metal is popular, and its good if music evolve into new styles, helps it from getting stagnated.

Except WEEKEND BEAST is there any new interesting Doom bands out from Sweden ? What do you think of SORCERER coming back and recording a new album ?
Bands to watchout for includes: Saturnalia Temple, Year Of The Goat, Atlantic Tide :) Other great ones just starting to get more famous are: The graviators, Nymf, Doomdogs, In Solitude, Noctum, Skogen Brinner, Skraeckoedlan, Horizont and many more.
I love that Burning Saviours, Atlantic Tide and Sorcerer have re-unioned again ! infact i think its awesome \m/

Now you’re planning to do a radioshow called THE SUPERPSYCHE DOOMADELIKA SHOW !!! how did this new idea come ? do you enjoy the Soggy Bog, Steaming Heathen, etc… ? do you have all the necessary material for this ? Do you have contacts with radios that could host your show ?
Soggy Bog, and the Heathen are inspirations and great shows !
I'm proud and happy that my Bro´ Robert John Anglum Show Soggy Bog were picked by Earache to air the all new Hour Of 13 record (H13 Rules) All Hail Soggy Bog !
I got lots of love and respect for internet radio that plays Doom Metal. I helped out some in Foundry Of Doom and played music there.
Been asked why i dont do a radio both by people on FB and by friends in real life. I used to be a music DJ, Mostly dj at my friends diffrent clubs.
For instance i DJed when The Shrine hosted Electric Wizard, Terra Firma, Norrsken, Candlemass, House Of Aquaris and lots of other cool bands. A lot of other things happened at The Shrine in Stockholm.
I have done some funny music compilations of rare 70s Metal, psych and Proto Doom with a friend called Otis (Hi Michael!) that were kinda popular it were named: The LSD Connection by Kuma and Otis. (Im sure you find some if you google)
I have (if i say it myself) a rather good and extensive collection of music, i figured that it must be time to for me to spread it around a little on the radio waves.
Way too little Obscure 70s Protodoom, traditional doom, Stoom and Heavy Psych music in general on the airwaves !
But my microphone is busted i noticed, so i will have to buy a new one very soon.
I test recorded and it sounds very Swenglish (i only speak that, I kinda sound like the Swedish muppet chef )
Will send them (my radio host contacts) a full show when its ready, and then the ones intrested can air it
Goatess made the logo and it looks awesome (shes among the coolest artist ever)

About Tattoos, one of your most significant is the ST VITUS logo on your left arm… any other that you’re particularly proud of ? Any new tattoo planed ?
Most proud of my Pentagram chest tattoo (oh... didn't see that one before ! wonderful indeed) , and the Celtic Frost Morbid Tales record cover on my leg.
On The Hooded Priest Record im on the thanklist as Mikael The Pentagram chest, thats a great honour for me. I'm going to tattoo in Doom on my fingers and the logo of Lord Vicar next week.

After 25 years, how do you see the evolution of the underground METAL scene ? Did internet help to enlighten it ? Do you download stuff or just listen on the net and then buy the albums ? Today if a band releases an album just on TAPE format, would you buy it ? same question for vynil... ?
The informations of a band to new fans are instant, that is great with internet, but waiting at the mailman for new music demos, VHS, or Fanzines had it charm aswell and taught me patience (well some)
I download and listen alot to music, i buy anything i find worth listening twice to on original (if i can find it)
Today i would buy Tape format only releases, but i dont 100 % get it, Its not a practical format.
Vinyl i love and it got my full support \m/

Thanx a lot for your time Mikael, all the best to you man.... add something if you feel there's anything important that I forgot to speak about !!!
Thank You Stéphane, its people like YOU, that keep the underground scene alive \m/ Doom On !
I will leave with some Finnish words of wisdom, Minotauri - Doom Metal Alchemy :

The old scroll of doom hides the secrets...
It tells about the recipe of this sinister art...
The music is dark, from the funerals...
The lyrics are full of agony, taken from the grave...
Playing doom metal it's like a crusade...
But instead of cross we have the electric axe...
Being on stage it's like being possessed...
The volume moves like a vortex in your head...
Into the void we'll play our art...
Into the oblivion we'll sing our songs...

kiss my axe ! - HORN OF THE RHINO "Grengus" -

Sometimes, a simple artwork can help you recognize what musical style is played on a record. A snow-covered landscape? Black Metal! A pile of putrid body parts? Death/Gore! A massive dick surrounded by two goat feet? Doom Me...Wait...WHAT?

Well, spanish monsters Horn Of The Rhino (ex-Rhino before a copyright problem with the name...Check their 2008 'Dead Throne Monarch' release, it's worth it) have done it. But let's stay away from that huge cock and let's take a spin of the album, to see if it's as massive as this drawn hard-on. Well, it is massive but it seems that the spaniards have lost a bit of something since their 2010 album 'Weight Of Coronation'. The music you'll find here is far from being your average slow Doom : indeed, it seems that Horn Of The Rhino have overdosed a bit too much on High On Fire ('Under The Hoof' and 'Waste For Ghouls' could have been written by Matt Pike). Not necessarily a bad choice for me, but nothing that hasn't been done before. The real problem is simply that they don't sound like Horn Of The Rhino but like a High On Fire clone.

So, the fast parts are awesomely fast and barbaric, the way you expect that bunch of Venom-inspired Metal to be done. This should create some very brutal pits, but where Horn Of The Rhino really shines is in the slow parts. This come then to no surprise that the best song of the album is the 11 minutes long 'Brought back', an incredible mix between the best days of Soundgarden (vocalist Javier Galvez is doing an impressive Chris Cornell impersonation) mixed with some Bolt Thrower, even Autopsy. And seriously, how can you resist to lyrics that are that cool?

'Last night I slept with dead gods and they told me to reclaim my throne'

Talking about Soundgarden, the band continue its tradition of giving LP fans a small bonus in the form of a cover track. This time, it's 'Searching With My Good Eye Closed', and Horn Of The Rhino manage to transform the original track into something they could have written themselves. If you remember they previous great cover from 'Disturbing The Priest', you know what to expect again this time. It's just too bad that the rest of the album isn't as good as those two songs, yet it's still better than a lot of other bands in the same league.

OUT now on ACID PUNX rds : ICE DRAGON 1st unreleased album + ELDER demos + 70's Obscure rarities and more ... !!!

Here's a focus on a fantastic TAPE-label that deserves your particular attention : ACID PUNX Records...
This is just a presentation of the tapes (which -for a great part - I've personally ordered a couple of days ago), but I felt it was urgent to share the infos, as all those tapes are edited in very limited quantities, so hurry up if you wanna be the lucky owner from one of those delicious goodies !!!

You certainly have heard/read something about A.P. recently through the almighty ICE DRAGON which announced the release on Tape of "the Sorrowful Sun" through them, but that is NOT all... !!!
Indeed Acid Punx is pleased to offer you Ice Dragon's never before released, self-titled, debut album! Laid down in the winter of 2007, these tracks define what Ice Dragon would ultimately become, which is one of the most original traditional doom bands recording today. We don't expect this title to stay in stock long, so pick one up before it's absorbed by the sands of time!
Tracks: 1. Wasted Nights 2. Cubenis Envy 3. So Far Away It Has No End
4. Shiny Side Up, Dirty... 5. I Might Be Gone 6. Fire and Stone
7. Drawn into the Fog 8. When You Stop By

Acid Punx adheres to very strict standards when it comes to present day releases. Their catalog, for the most part, is steeped in the 1970s, so anything "modern" that they release must be worthy of the past. ELDER, as it happens, is worthy. These demos, recorded in 2007, show the band formulating a sound that would inevitably carry them into their last two albums. The live tracks, recorded in 2009 and 2010, provide an insight into the awesome power Elder possesses when blasting out in front of live audiences. Slightly psychedelic, very heavy, this release is a must for traditionalists, not to mention fans of Elder.

Tracks: 1. 1162    2. Red Sunrise 3. Black Midnight 4. Gemini (Live) 5. Riddle of Steel (Live)

V/A "Do What Thou Wilt: Occult Psychedelia 1970-74"

Originally released on vinyl in 2011 and limited to only 200 copies, this comp was virtually sold-out before it ever left the pressing plant. But, lucky for you, "Do What Thou Wilt" is back, this time on cassette! Chronicling four years of England's musical underbelly, this release dives deep to uncover some of the best lost acetates, demonic demos, and other hard rockin' oddities of the time. Don't be scared! Well, maybe just a little bit.

Tracks:
1. Camelot - Time Around Me
2. Pony - I'm a Mover
3. Shado - Evil City
4. Heatwave - 999
5. Grind - Rip Off
6. Sioux - Warlove
7. Sardonicus - Nymph
8. Yellow - The Hobo Song
9. Sardonicus - Evaporated...
10. Tonge - Looking at the...
11. Wooden Lion - Rise of...
12. Grind - Earth Song
13. Bare Soul - Flash
14. Unicorn - Another World
15. Lucifer - Fuck You

ÄTMAN-ACRON "108 Luciferian Neutronic Eyes"

Tracks: 1. Apprentice of the Black... 2. Emperors of the Immortal...
Bonus track: 3. A National Acrobat

This single saw a very limited vinyl release in 2011, so we thought it was high time to have a very limited cassette version done up...Atman agreed. Better still, this release includes a bonus track of the band playing around with Sabbath's "A National Acrobat" during a rehearsal! Needless to say, very few modern day bands make the cut here at Acid Punx, so you should have a pretty good idea of what you're getting into with this one. Pick it up before it's gone!

SANDOZ "Sandoz"

Tracks: 1. Apple Core Machine  2. I Ain't Strong  3. Demi-God

Dating back to 1971, these are the only known recordings of Sandoz and they are being issued here in their original "unpolished" state for the first time ever! Sandoz was the brainchild of John Goodsall (Atomic Rooster) and his vision was HEAVY. Straight fuzz, deep thumps, animal beats, these tracks are heavy duty and not one of them falls under 8 minutes in length. A must for fans of Edgar Broughton Band.

Check out the label's site for details on their other releases : rarities from other 70's obscure gems like DEATH "Politicians in My Eyes/Keep on Knockin'" (US -1976-), SUCK "Time to Suck" (South Afrika - 1970), GRAND THEFT "Grand Theft" (US - 1972)...

no pity for the bastards : BUD SPENCER "people are curious but from the outside"

Instrumental bands are generally rare and even more here in France; BUD SPENCER out from Nancy is instrumental and despite a  name that can obviously make smile, is in no case a dispensable joke band, no Grind, no fun Core or whatever this name could imply to anyone's imagination... we've got here an excellent SLUDGE band !!!
Yet, like the illustrious actor, BUD SPENCER is massive and extremely percussive but if I had to add other caracteristics I would then consider it as an hybrid between this big moustache and the scary, sharp creature of the cover !!! The brand of Sludge provided by this 3 piece  is not the kind of filthy and noisy , it's still very thick  but more the heady, mesmerizing, crushing and very very powerful side of it with alternatively a slight Metallic and (post) HC edge, while a few airy moments help to loosen the pressure here and there...
It's always hard to predict how a young band will evolute with time and I also can't tell if the need of a singer will be felt after one or two next releases but as for this "People are Curious but from the Outside", believe me there's not a single second where a lack (of vocals) is felt, this is so catchy and intense !
BUD SPENCER is a nice revelation , check them out and support (y)our scene \m/

From Birmingham, enjoy "Provenance" by SHEBREW

From Birmingham City (UK) comes SHEBREW, a trio composed by  Francis (guit/voc), Giles (bass) and Kieran(drums)... The band recently released a (debut) 5 songs EP entitled "Provenance".
If they're influenced by The Obsessed, Kyuss, Black Sabbath, Pentagram, like they say it humbly and realistically  themselves, they sound nothing like any of them !!! but if there was just one to remember out of these masters, I would then choose Kyuss for the general warmth and crushingness of the riffs and the fact that the band is STONER before all, not Doom even if the mood is based on  heavy and catchy mid-tempos...
Where SHEBREW stands out of the masses is with that constant use of melody, as a perpetual balance to the heaviness displayed; another thing is the interpretation  of this melodic approach comes out through an original combination of  some 70's vintage Heavy ass-Rock with hints of Grunge stuff being certainly the result of  a pretty nice melancholic edge ...
Finally this gives a very very fresh result, enough heavy and powerful, constantly melodic, fairly soulful and refined; I would be really curious to hear how do they sound LIVE and in all cases am very confident for their future, such a personnality should necessarily bring many connoisseurs ears to this "Provenance"... starting by yours, go now listen this ! This is physically available on CD format through their Bigcartel page...

an Interview with Brandon Malone of FIRE FAITHFUL

This quatuor hailing from Virginia recently released their self-financed debut album entitled "Please Accept this Invocation"... one of the very best surprises of this year so far !!! Not easy to classify in a precise branch, FIRE FAITHFUL plays a very solid blend of Southern/Stoner Metal with a special Doomy touch. Something very heavy, dowtuned and handsome that should easily catch the attention of fans from  Hail! Hornet, King Giant, but also Earthride or War Injun for those amazing doomy moods and the excellent vocals of Brandon Malone.
In order to know more about this new rising force, I've asked a dozen of questions to Brandon, a real charismatic frontman, humble, talented, breathing true and warm  Southern Stoner Rock...

First, thanx for accepting this interview Brandon... Could you please do a bit of history about FIRE FAITHFUL : when did you form and why did you choose this name ? Did the fact of forming F.F. represent something different from your previous experiences ?
Fire Faithful formed in 2009 and I guess you could say morphed out of Southern Vein. We landed on the name Fire Faithful because it was actually a song we wrote, lyrically based off the 70's horror flick, "The brotherhood of Satan", which is about a family that gets stranded in a town where a cult of geriatric satanists use children to do satan's bidding. They are the Fire Faithful.

I've read that your bassist left just before the recording of the album which implied that Shane (guit) handle all the bass parts on "please accept this invocation", did you find Jon Bone easily after ?
It was our guitarist Dave Marrs who departed from the band on good terms I like to think. We are still great friends and we love him. So yes that did leave Shane, who was the bassist before, to handle all the strings on the recording....and he ripped some ass man.  Jon and I work at the same building, that's how we met about 3 years ago. We flirted with the idea of jamming last summer when we were going through some lineup changes but it just wasn't the right time. However now is the right time and he's THE GUY man let me tell you. Great dude, great bass player.

Was it something easy or rather difficult to place the 8 songs in order ? you know I dig the album in its entirety but  I ask this because personally I would have not placed "a devil's in London" as opener, I think the burning "alone with a stranger" would have been better instead, what's your opinion ?
I must have sent you the songs in the wrong order. The order should be: Please accept this Invocation, Dollar bottomed out, A Devil in London, Disgust is a Must, Enter the Monster, Flamingo, WonTon Lavey, and Alone with a Stranger. The idea was to put Invocation first to set the mood. The album is all about the mood.

You qualify your style as Ultra Sonic Doom Metal which can retranscribe a part of your sound but it also includes quite many Southern and Stoner tones... are labels important to you or is mainly just r'n'r ?! Are you proud when you read references to Earthride, War Injun, Hail! Hornet or Alabama Thunderpussy ?
Rock and roll no doubt. obviously we consider ourselves a doom/stoner band, but we just try to write good songs. And those songs will always be on the heavier side. It gives me the warm and fuzzies to be mentioned in the same sentence with those bands man. Like popping a percocet with a shot o whiskey.

One of  the main  distinctive force of F.F. concerns your vocals, there's lots of variation in your way of singing, from the traditional whiskey-soaked southern style to something more agressive in parts and croony in others;  the song "please accept this invocation" could be the most distinctive in terms of crooning, it sounds like you're locked up in a dark, confined and sticky place... does it need a special work or  state of mind ?
Yeah I was really trying something new on that song. I had a Danzig III feeling when Shane brought those riffs to the table. Again very moody ya know. Vince Burke's wisdom was a big help too man. It is a state of mind. When I write, I come up with a general theme for a song then I will find a place in my head, and I will think about what I would smell in that place or situation, or what I would see, or hear. All senses aroused. That's how I write most of the time and I'm always trying to find new ways to deliver it.

Speaking again about the title track, I think its first part shows a bit different tones to my ears, sounding more like "desert rock" stuff reminding some cool Brant Bjork, this is more intimistic and strangely a bit more  luminous and warm at the same time, how do you see this song and why did you choose it as the title for the album ?
I came up with it as the album title before we wrote the song. I like plays on words haha. When we wrote the song it was a couple days before we were going to Vince's and were at practice and thinking that we really needed one more track for the album and thought it should be like an intro thing. So Shane I think had just kinda came up with a couple of those parts and I started bullshitting over it and then Joss kicked in and it was written and tight in like an hour. And it's been getting some of the best feed back, it's crazy and very cool.

Vince Burke from Hail! Hornet and Beaten Back to Pure is credited for the production work of the album, did you personally know him previously ? how did this happen ?
Everybody knows Vince, haha, his resume speaks for itself. But no we didn't know him before, just new of him and had seen him around the scene. I got Vince's number from Willy(Lord, Ol scratch), cause Lord had just recorded "Chief" (which is badass), called him up and he was very accomodating. It was a great experience.

You have done a video for the song "Wonton Lavey", was it filmed at your rehearsal place ? was it  made by friends of yours or did you work with some people from outside your environment ?
The video was made by the family. we are a family band. helter skelter. Shane took a self crash course on video shooting. Shane is the type of guy who will take on a challenge that he's never done before and nail it every time. He's one of the smartest and most motivated people I have ever met and I'm proud to call him a friend and a bandmate. My wife also setup the perfect altar table I might add and our friends came through for us in a major way. We shot it at our friend Travis grandparents' barn. He showed them the video  and they said we were satanists and that he was going to hell for helping us. haha, mission accomplished.

You guys know and have played with quite many great bands, have released a very consistant album for a debut but for the moment the name of F.F. is still pretty unknown in the worldwide scene... are you working on this ?  do you maybe think you should need some help from  a promotional agency or something ?
We are working hard on spreading our stuff to the masses if they'll have us. We are pretty DIY at this point. Some of that from choice but some from necessity. Help would be tits though.

I know you're going to play at the next SHOD fest  , do you have good memories of last year edition ? Any other gigs planed ? If you had to choose one foreign country to play in first, which one would it be ?
SHOD was a blast. Went for the whole fest, partied the WHOLE fest. Played a tight set that Sunday. So many impressive bands. We are thrilled to be doing it again this year. That was the first time I heard Weed is Weed. that was a highlight. We are playing the Heinzmann benefit at the 611 cafe in Fredrick Maryland on June 30th. We are also working on some dates around SHOD up the east coast. Might be hooking up with Borracho and Kingsnake on that. I'm dying to play in Europe first, no question.

Lyrically wise you deal with Occult and Drugs stuff... it makes me think that on your FB page you mention Electric Wizard and Weedeater in the bands that count for you, which I think is not really obvious musically but maybe they've had an influence on the lyrics ?
Yeah lyrically I draw alot from the occult and horror/cult films. And sometimes just whatever life has thrown at me.

You've recently posted a new song "Organized Occult Love" for an upcoming ep , can you tell more about this new stuff ? will it be released by yourselves or a label ? Do you feel the band is in a very productive era and maybe(at least musically) the most difficult is behind you ?
We have demoed out three songs that will be released in succession over three weeks. "Organized Occult Love" we put out last week. "Harvest Rune" I believe was going up today, so look for that. And lastly " King Macabre" next week. Just to put a taste test out there ya know. We plan on recording an ep or possibly another full length late June with Garrett Morris from Windhand at the controls. These three songs should end up on it and we are really looking forward to working with Garrett. I do feel like this is the most productive this band has ever been. We've had alot of struggle with this band as most bands do and it feels good to be over the humps.
Ok Brandon thanx for your time, maybe I forgot something important so here's your chance to add what you want and then end this intie...
Well first I want to thank you for taking the time to chat with me Steph! Your support is greatly appreciated. I want to thank High on Fire for putting out their new album. it has served me well. I want to thank my band and friends. I'd like to say R.I.P Levon Helm. And much love to my wife, kids, and family.

Out soon on Voidhanger Rds : CHOWDER "passion rift"

The source of all those informations comes from the VOIDHANGER rds site :

AN OVERVIEW BY JOHN BRENNER OF REVELATION

Since 1992, guitarist Josh Hart and drummer Chad Rush have been writing Chowder’s music, bringing together their early exposure to doom metal, progressive rock, and hardcore. Although he originally played bass in Maryland metal bands Revelation and Unorthodox, Hart took to the guitar for writing his own material. Once original bassist Joe Ruthvin left the band for MD doom stalwarts Earthride, Chowder remained in limbo until finding bassist Doug Williams. Doug came to Chowder from the hardcore scene's Next Step Up, a band that would feature at different times all three current members of Chowder. The band recorded demos in the 90s, but it wasn’t until 2007 that Chowder recorded their debut EP, released on Bland Hand Records.

Immediately after recording the EP, Chowder’s ambitions broadened and deepened. Taking their unique vision even further, they wrote a new song, titled “Passion Rift,” which would become the epic title cut for their first full-length album.

Nearly two years in the making, “Passion Rift” encompasses everything that makes Chowder a great band: off-kilter arrangements, abrupt time-changes, memorable melodies, creepy dissonances, top-notch songwriting, performances, and arrangements, and a true passion for making heavy music. Tastefully strewn throughout the record are analog and digital keyboards, cello, and various samples and sound effects, giving a texture to the songs that grows more rewarding with each listen.

Songs such as “The Innsmouth Look” and “Head Full of Rats,” with their forward-rushing, unrelenting progressive metal, sit next to atmospheric pieces such as “Mazuku” and “Mysterioid,” in a mix part hardcore, part Lovecraft, and part autobiography. And then there is the epic title cut “Passion Rift,” as big in its scope as “Hemispheres” (Rush), a journey through a landscape at times peaceful, tense, melancholic, aggressive, and nightmarish. This is music that communicates something important, and it does so without lyrics or vocals.

Born in hardcore, bred on metal, and nourished by prog, Chowder’s all-instrumental music allows Josh’s precision arrangements and heavy guitar playing, Chad’s technical yet propulsive drumming, and Doug’s deep bass anchoring to rattle walls and turn heads.

                                                           "Saturated" from the EP

Heavy and brutal as fuck Stoner/Sludge with LAW OF THE TONGUE

Formed last year around two ex-members of POD PEOPLE, this quatuor from Camberra presents here a quite interesting debut, consisting in 7 songs for about 35 minutes of  STONER/ DOOM  with prominent SLUDGE vocals...
Musically this is very thick and crushing with basically Wizardian and Sleepian riffage but the band doesn't  have an occult approach, neither it is particularly heady and mesmerizing, they are more in the hammering way of things, sometimes almost crusty with those heavy as fuck vocals...
The music is catchy, not highly original though, but I feel that, after two or three songs, the vocals could be a problem for a part. Ok they are pretty good for the most part, brutal and extremely filthy, in the godly vein of Weedeater, but there's growls that are in my opinion too grinding compared to the music and on the lenght they lack of variety, they could be a bit nuanced at times- when there's some nice smokey moments for example... I'm not saying this ruins the rest but there's an improvement to work on here, the general potencial is obvious but this would help the overall to be more homogeneous and cohesive. LAW OF THE TONGUE is still a band to follow closely in the near future and this is available as FREE download, so enjoy it and spread the word about that new Aussie BEAST !

"Muddy Mermaids" by POTERGEIST from Greece

This 2nd album from POTERGEIST (out from Greece) starts with a friendly warning :  "Forgive me God  for I'm about to Rock 'n' Roll… Again…" !!! and that draws pretty well what to expect from this new 2nd album, freshly released by Distroball Productions.
Some Bluesy Stoner 'n roll with slight Metal touches, POTERGEIST has got a real potencial, it doesn't trickle of originality but is very very tightly played and enough varied, with lots of  swinging bluesy riffage, twisted breaks and airy solos, to quickly dive into their southern swampy moods. ...
It's not injurious at all towards the fact of being Greek but if they were Americans I'm sure that these guys will actually support CLUTCH, MOTÖRHEAD or DOWN on their next tour ! Well, their 1st album was released 4 years ago (which is long nowadays for an upcoming band) they're Greek and a bit isolated in this part of Europe but now this "Muddy Mermaids" should definitely help them to tour abroad and get a well deserved larger exposure.
Full of nice harmonies, warm whiskey/pot soaked vocals, POTERGEIST doesn't forget to  introduce harmonica, accoustic parts and a few psyche touches here and there, this makes all first 7 songs extremely captivating, until the last one comes...this title track is indeed strangely, at least to my ears, the weakest !  not bad at all but too different from the rest with predominant (guest) female vocals and a modern emo touch that is really not my taste.
But don't misunderstand me, this album globally fucking rules and the fact that this is the last song reduces the importance of this little disagreement and most important, that doesn't prevent from listening the album 2 or 3 times in a row, just do like me then : when the 7th song is over I just click on the 1st and... let's go again for 40 minutes of great Heavy Southern ' roll !!!

Candlelight Records Sampler Available For Free Via Amazon Starting Today

Candlelight Records today launches a free label sampler available exclusively from Amazon.com. The 8-song sampler includes previously unreleased material from FALLOCH, THE ROTTED, WODENSTHRONE, SEAR BLISS, WOE, WINTERFYLLETH, RUMPELSTILTSKIN GRINDER and includes the first single from IHSAHN’s new album Eremita.

“The Paranoid” is taken from IHSAHN’s anticipated fourth solo album. Set for release June 19, Eremita was mixed by Jens Bogren (Opeth) and features performances from drummer Tobias Ornes Andersen (Leprous), saxophonist Jorgen Munkeby (Shining-Norway), guitarist Jeff Loomis (ex-Nevermore), and vocalists Devin Townsend, Einar Solberg (Leprous), and Heidi S. Tveitan (StarofAsh). MetalSucks editor Vince Neilstein says, "The Paranoid" is a perfect introduction to Eremita. It's heavy, expansive, and it's complex without being an asshole about it. Not that any of this should be surprising; IHSAHN’s been developing his own singularly definable sound for three albums now, so fans should know what to expect.”

The inclusion of an early production mix of RUMPELSTILTSKIN GRINDER’s “Fucking Wild” follows the recent announcement of the band’s forthcoming new album, Ghostmaker. The Philadelphia-based quartet recently completed a string of regional performances and are now gearing up for dates to support the new album once it hits stores nationwide on June 19. Guitarist Ryan Moll says, "the title of this track says it all. It’s a rather suiting description of its relentlessness. The lyrics were written by Shawn (Riley) and the title was inspired by some old live Venom recordings."

FALLOCH’s “The Ghosts That Haunts This Path” is a new song for American audiences. Previously available as a b-side to a European-only single, the song showcases the impressive stylings of the Scottish post-black metal duo. MSN Metal called the band’s debut Where Distant Spirits Remain, “a drop-dead gorgeous, haunting piece of work.” Kerrang called it, “intoxicating, haunting, beautiful.” Brooklyn Vegan adds, “it's clear that FALLOCH aims to walk along the righteous path of adventurous black metal bands like Alcest. Where Distant Spirits Remain is a great first step in that direction.

Planning to hit the studio in early June to lay down tracks for their third album, WOE’s reworked “Quietly, Undramatically” opens a new door on the title track from the band’s popular 2010 release of the same name. Vocalist/guitarist Chris Grigg notes, "the remixed version of 'Quietly, Undramatically' is a more accurate representation of what was hoped to achieve with the material and offers a different perspective into the album." Decibel Magazine said, “Woe strive for sophistication without falling into the usual pitfalls of pretentiousness, cartoonish-ness or undue gloss. Essential aggression is maintained, while the atmospheric and emotional depth envelopes are pushed with a bold fearlessness.”
